And particularly, boys when they say (on the bringing up of the subject of buying jewellery):
"I was going to buy you some jewellery earlier today.
But I didn't."

Does the man think this earns him points: Joe didn't even think of buying you jewellery - I'm better than that because I considered the possibility (even though I didn't).
I am not convinced by the reasoning.
Pierre, oh if only there were boys fighting jewellery wars over me! But sadly, this was my husband...
I think Pierre has somehting there--maybe men think that saying things like this earns them points.
It's the only explanation I can think of.

I think that's true. He was hoping to demonstrate how thoughtful he is.
In a fucked up sort of a way.
